PhD Project Designing medical technology to facilitate adolescents' self-management of type 1 diabetes
Student Name Gillian McCarthy

Adolescents with type 1 diabetes require medical technologies that allow them to manage their condition while going about daily life.

Once we’d established adolescents’ psychosocial user requirements of medical technologies, we tasked design students with creating devices to meet these requirements. How might a medical technology allow efficient management at night-time, draw positive attention rather than being embarrassing and stigmatising, or facilitate daily structure while allowing for spontaneity?
